Getting rid of muscle knots

I have a terrible muscle knot below my left shoulder blade that's a trigger point. It causes my lower back to hurt. I massage it with tennis balls often, which reduces the pain and allows me to lift temporarily, but it keeps coming back again and again. Any tips?
