Gaining more muscle definition, dieting & exercising tips etc.

As said above I'd like to know some tips for gaining muscle definition Should I focus on hypertrophy rep range even though I won't be eating enough to gain but doing it to keep what I have. Should I focus more on heavier lifting as if working for strength. Or just do either I'm feeling...
