Is it effective to alternate exercises for muscle groups?

For example if I'm doing shoulder and chest, would it be effective to do like 10 reps of dumbbell press and when im finished get right into shoulder laterals with no rest in between? Then go back and forth so I do each 3-4 times? This would save a lot of time and I like having short rest periods
