Specifically what happens in a non-warm muscle that causes it to be easily injured?

I have tried googling this on 3 different occasions and all I get are studies indicating that stretching AND warming up prevents injuries, that stretching does not reduce muscle soreness, how much warming up reduces injury, that the studies were done on non-injured participants, that muscles warm...
